Teaching Toward a Sustainable Future
“Teaching Toward a Sustainable Future: Preparing the Next Generation for Global Environmental Challenges” is a workshop focused on addressing environmental concerns that will impact the future of today’s students.
Designed as a professional development workshop intended primarily for K-12 educators, this one-day event will inform participants about how people around the globe are addressing changes in their environment due to climate change, environmental disasters, and the impact of humans on nature. This workshop is designed for educators seeking to understand the uncertainties and address the underlying issues related to shifts in our natural surroundings. Participants will learn about international environmental issues, as well as issues we face at home in the Midwest. They will leave the workshop prepared to inspire their students to use a global perspective to live in a more sustainable way in their own backyard.
Teachers will hear from scholars at the University of Kansas and local educators who are engaged in studying the environment and its effect on humanity, while exploring pathways to help bridge communities and understand the global interconnectedness of our Earth’s complex environmental systems. Activities will include presentations from educators, a demonstration of how to create musical instruments from repurposed materials, a screening of the documentary “Plastics Are Forever,” and a focused time of collaborative lesson planning to begin designing your own plan to apply the day’s content in your classroom. Teachers will be given the opportunity to question and engage with environmental issues in the Midwest as well as globally, exploring how it affects their lives, the lives of their students, and how we can connect those experiences to broader contexts across the globe.
