Admission Criteria and How to Apply

To be considered for admission to the FASt M.A. program in Contemporary East Asian Studies, students must meet the following criteria:

Foreign Affairs Studies (FASt): Contemporary East Asia in Global Context

An accelerated (12-month) program designed for Foreign Area Officer students with second-level (intermediate) language proficiency and substantial first-hand experience in East Asia. This concentration is usually selected for professional advancement. More information is available at: A $2,000 per semester fee is assessed for the first three semesters of the FASt program.


  • B.A. or B.S. degree or the equivalent
  • Minimum 3.0 grade-point average in their bachelor’s degree
  • Proficiency in an East Asian language at the second level demonstrated by classwork or testing
  • A prior period (or periods) of residency in East Asia

The applications should be submitted no later than May 1 for fall semester admission. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for the fall semester admission to take advantage of course sequences, but spring and summer admissions are possible with the approval of the CEAS director and graduate advisor.

All application materials must be received before your application can be evaluated. A complete application consists of the following:

  1. An online application submitted to Graduate Studies along with KU's graduate application fee ($65 domestic applicants, $85 international applicants 
  2. One official transcript for all post-secondary education sent directly from your degree-granting institution. This includes additional graduate degrees. 
  3. Three letters of recommendation submitted by your references, submitted electronically through KU's graduate application system. You may have your references mail hard copies if they choose, along with a signed copy of the Graduate Letter of Recommendation Form [PDF]
  4. A two-page statement of purpose explaining your educational and academic objectives
  5. A writing sample that demonstrates your writing skills and basic research capacity
  6. A current resume or C.V. (Curriculum Vitae)
  7. International students must submit TOEFL scores taken within the past two years per KU Policy. Students should have TOEFL scores of 20 or above in all categories (excluding speaking) before applying. The Applied English Center may also require incoming international students to complete an examination to show their English proficiency upon arrival in Lawrence. Information about the minimum acceptable English scores is available through the KU Office of International Programs and Graduate Studies

Please note: though the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is not required for admission, it is recommended.

Applicants may submit their application, application fee, statement of interest, and resume through the application link above. GRE scores and TOEFL scores should be sent directly to KU using institution code 6871. Digital copies of transcripts may be emailed directly from the degree-granting institution to Official transcripts can also be mailed to the address below:
